Just saw Thor

Let us speak of the difference between “quality” and “enjoyment.”

On a technical quality level, I put Thor in the top half of Marvel movies, but not at the top of the top half. Mostly well scripted, mostly well cast, but a storyline that was pretty predictable even by action movie standards.

On an enjoyment level, though? Well, I confess that it may be in part to my bias toward fantasy, and in part to how much I loved much of the casting and dialog, but in terms of how much fun I had, I put near the top of the comic book movies list. I will own this, and I may see it a second time in the theater. :-D

And this coming from someone who was never that big a follower of the character, even back in my comic-devouring days.

Now that the Work in Progress is once again, uh, in progress, I can show you my progress.

Or something like that.

12700 / 70000 words. 18% done!

The observant reader…

…will have noticed that I haven’t put up any word count statuses on the Work in Progress over the past few days.

That’s because the WiP has, very briefly, become the Work Not in Progress. I’m taking a few days away from it to work on a short (but brain-draining) freelance gig. I can’t talk about what it is, yet, but it’s pretty cool.

And I should be back to the novel by the end of the week, so if you haven’t seen any new word count updates by Monday at the latest, feel free to poke me. ;-)

Day the Fifth

10479 / 70000 words. 15% done!

I’m actually a hair shy of my normal daily minimum. (I’m at 1,900 and change, rather than 2K or above.) But this is a really good place to stop, in as much as it’s a place that’ll be easy to pick up from. And since I’m not going to get to work this weekend, as I’ll be visiting with family, a spot from where it’s easy to pick up is fairly important.

Or, you know, I’ll decide that I’m just making excuses, and do some more work this evening. One or the other.

And within a couple hundred words of the end of Chapter One.

8495 / 70000 words. 12% done!

The chapter’s actually coming in a little longer than I expected, but this early in the book, I’m not prepared to guess what that means–if anything–for the overall length.

6464 / 70000 words. 9% done!

Given that I got zero work done during the day today (for numerous reasons that I don’t care to go into), and managed to crank out all of this in the past few hours, I think I can be fairly happy that I squeezed in a full day’s work. :-P

Took me far longer to write this word count today than it did yesterday, but at least it’s finally on paper. Or, well, bytes.

4382 / 70000 words. 6% done!

Okay, just because you like my writing–you do like my writing, I trust ;-) –doesn’t mean you’re going to like all the music I like. So you’re certainly welcome to ignore this. But…

If you’re so inclined, check out the kickstarter page for Toll Carom’s second album. And if you like what you see/hear, maybe throw a few bucks their way? I love the first album; I’d hate it if there weren’t a second.

(And yes, full disclosure: the lead singer is a very close friend of mine. But I wouldn’t have put up the link if I didn’t also like the music.)

Let’s get this party started

Here we go. The new work in progress is, well, in progress.

Target word count is, as always, a general estimate and is subject to change.

2262 / 70000 words. 3% done!

This is an Experiment…

…in Search Engine Manipulation.

Ahem:

George R. R. Martin: A Dance With Dragons

Patrick Rothfuss: The Wise Man’s Fear

Jim Butcher: Changes (or, if you prefer, Ghost Story)

Scott Lynch: The Republic of Thieves

Ari Marmell (that’s me): Look to your left. Then give some thought to buying something, if you’d be so kind. (Or read some of my free stuff. See? I’m reasonable.)

This concludes our experiment. Thank you for participating. 8-)

What? ;-)
