An open letter to Fandom

Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Perry White in the new Superman movie. Over in the Ultimates line of Marvel Comics, the new Spider-Man is a young bi-racial teen named Miles Morales.

If you dislike Fishburne as an actor, or if you’re upset that they killed Peter Parker (even in a reality separate from mainstream Marvel Comics), fine. No problem. But if your objection to either or both is that the actor/character isn’t white?

Shut the hell up and keep it to yourself. You’re making the rest of us geeks–and the rest of us human beings, for that matter–look bad.

(And I wish to hell this was just me being preemptive, but I’ve already seen lots of racist commentary on both issues, and it turns my stomach.)

How to Sell Sci-Fi/Fantasy Webinar

Hey, folks. Phil Athans–a guy with whom I and many other authors have worked, and who usually knows what he’s about (except, y’know, for the part where he hired me)–is doing a webinar on the 21st.  It’s all about selling your fantasy or sci-fi to agents and editors; you can find the details here.

If this is something you’ve been working toward, there are far worse people whose advice you could heed.

Does such a resource exist?

Okay, here’s a weird one.

Is there anywhere I can go on the net that presents lists of characters from myth and classical literature organized by the century/time period in which their exploits supposedly occurred?

Yeah, I know I don’t ask much, do I? 😉

ComicCon (noun)

A period of time during which non-traveling writers and freelancers can expect to receive absolutely no answers to any of their questions. 😛

(Have fun, guys. I hate you.)

So, Captain America…

I don’t know if I’m prepared to call this the best Marvel movie to date. Need to see it, and some of the others, a few more times.

But I am prepared to say that, in terms of mood/tone/feel/aesthetics, it got absolutely everything right. Seriously. It’s brilliant in that regard alone. My biggest complaint is that it wasn’t about eight hours longer, so we could see a lot more of Cap’s missions during WWII.

Between this and X-Men: First Class, I kind of want at least half of all comic book movies to be period pieces from here on out.
